Why This Spot is Different
Most snorkel sites near San Pedro are deep. You’re looking down from 10 or 15 feet. At Coral Gardens, the reef is right there. Sometimes it’s only 3 or 4 feet below your chest. This proximity changes everything. You can see the tiny Christmas tree worms retracting into the coral heads. You can see the sunlight dancing off the scales of a parrotfish as it munches on algae. It’s a macro-photographer’s dream, really.The currents here are significantly weaker than what you’ll find in the “Cut” at Hol Chan. The Marine Life: A Sea of Purple and Gold
The first thing you’ll notice at Coral Gardens is the sea fans. Thousands of them. They pulse with the surge of the ocean in shades of deep purple and yellow. It’s hypnotic. Among these fans, you’ll find schools of Blue Tangs – yes, like Dory – and the occasional Hawksbill turtle just drifting along.Because the water is so shallow and clear, the colors don’t get washed out by the blue of the deep ocean.
