Where is Belize?
Let’s start with the basics, where on earth is Belize?Belize is located in Central America, bordered by Mexico to the north, Guatemala to the west and south, and the Caribbean Sea to the east. But here’s where it gets interesting: although it’s part of mainland Central America, Belize is also a proud member of CARICOM, the Caribbean Community. That means it shares ties not just with its Central American neighbors, but also with Caribbean nations like Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago.So, geographically Central American, but culturally Caribbean? You bet. And that’s part of what makes Belize so unique.
Who Lives in Belize?
Here’s where things get even more colorful, the people of Belize are wonderfully diverse. Mestizo (≈53%): People of mixed Spanish and Mayan descent. You’ll find them mostly in northern Belize. Creole (≈26%): In Belize, this refers to anyone with partial Black African ancestry who speaks Kriol. Predominantly in Belize City. Maya (≈11%): Belize has three distinct Maya groups, Yucatec, Mopan, and Q’eqchi’, each with its own language and traditions. Garifuna (Garinagu): Afro-Indigenous people originally from St. Vincent, mostly residing in southern Belize, especially Dangriga. East Indians & Mennonites: Small but significant communities that contribute greatly to Belize’s agriculture and economy
